Butte County
Butte County is located in the northern portion of the Central Valley. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 203,171. The city of Oroville is the county seat. Butte County is known as the "Land of Natural Wealth and Beauty."
Butte County is watered by the Feather River and the Sacramento River. The sixth largest waterfall in the United States is called Feather Falls and is located in the northeast corner of the county. In 1967 the Oroville Dam was completed. This dam is the largest earth-filled dam in the United States and was built to act as a major water storage facility for the California State Water Project.
Several movies have been filmed in Butte County, including Gone with the Wind, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Friendly Persuasion, Magic Town, The Klansman, Ruby Ridge: An American Tragedy, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Under Wraps.
