El Dorado County is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Its neighboring counties are Placer County to the north, Sacramento to the west, Amador and Alpine to the south and the Nevada state line to the east. Its population was estimated to be 172,889 in 2004. The county seat is located in the town of Placerville.

Much of the population of El Dorado County has become suburbanized, because the Sacramento Metropolitan Statistical Area has expanded. In addition, the population of the Lake Tahoe area has also boomed since having hosted the 1960 winter Olympics.
