Madera County is located in the Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada north of Fresno County. It is part of the Madera–Chowchilla Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2008 census the population was 152,465. The county seat is the town of Madera.

Yosemite National Park, known for its beauty, is located in the northeast section of the county. Madera County was formed in 1893. Madera means “wood” in Spanish. The county was named after the town of Madera, which was named when the California Lumber Company built a log flume to carry lumber to the railroad there in 1876.
